“Microsoft and Verizon announced the deal in January 2009. They didn’t disclose the terms, but The Wall Street Journal reported the companies were discussing sharing ad revenue with guaranteed payments by Microsoft of $550 million to $650 million over five years.
The deal was strongly pushed within Microsoft by CEO Steve Ballmer, who viewed it as a way to establish a beach head against Google in the mobile search market, according to several current and former Microsoft executives. The deal, however, was viewed skeptically by many Microsoft insiders, who doubted it would ever pay off for the company, these people said.”
