Borders turned over its Internet operations to Amazon in 2001, just as Internet shopping was taking off. The company only took back its Borders.com website in 2008. Borders also was slow to pile into electronic books, waiting until last year to launch its own electronic reading device, called Kobo, and an e-books store. That gave a huge head start to Amazon’s Kindle, Apple’s iPad and other e-reading options and Barnes & Noble’s Nook.
